Frequently Asked Questions

What does this Seat Matrix Explorer show?

It shows how JoSAA 2025 seats are distributed by category (OPEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD) and by gender, across NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs. Filter by college type, branch area, state and seat pool, then break the count down by any of those dimensions.

Why is the data only for 2025?

JoSAA publishes the seat matrix only for the current counselling year — there is no historical seat-matrix archive. We deliberately do not fabricate prior-year seat counts. For how cutoffs have moved since 2023, use the chance estimate in the College Predictor instead.

Gender-neutral vs female-only seats?

Female-only seats are supernumerary (extra) seats reserved for women to improve gender balance. Women are also fully eligible for every gender-neutral seat, so the female-only count is over and above what women can win in the open pool.

Do seat counts mean students selected?

Seats are the number available; JoSAA fills almost all of them across its rounds, so the seat matrix is a close proxy for the number of students finally admitted in each category and pool.

What are the AI, HS and OS seat pools?

AI (All-India) seats are open to candidates from anywhere — used by IITs and IIITs and for half of NIT seats. HS (Home-State) seats at an NIT are reserved for candidates from the state the NIT is in; OS (Other-State) seats are for everyone else.

Why don't you show applicants by state or gender?

NTA and JoSAA do not publish applicant or selected counts broken down by state or by gender at the college or branch level, so we cannot show that honestly. We only display figures that come from official data.

How is the category seat split decided?

Government reservation policy sets the split: roughly 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, up to 10% EWS, with the remainder OPEN, plus horizontal PwD reservation. Exact counts per institute appear in the official seat matrix this page is built on.

Can I see seats for a single college?

Yes. Set "Break down by" to College, or filter to a state and college type to narrow the list. You can also break down by Branch area to see which streams have the most seats.

Are IITs included?

IIT seats appear here because they are part of the same JoSAA seat matrix. Note IITs admit on JEE Advanced rank, not JEE Main — so to look up IIT chances use a JEE Advanced rank in the Cutoff Search.

How current is this data?

It reflects the JoSAA 2025 final seat matrix, refreshed each year after JoSAA publishes the new matrix. Always confirm exact figures on the official JoSAA portal before relying on them.
