Frequently Asked Questions
How do I determine hybridisation quickly in JEE?
Use the formula: Hybridisation = ½(V + M − C + A) where V = valence electrons of central atom, M = monovalent atoms attached, C = cationic charge, A = anionic charge. Result 2=sp, 3=sp², 4=sp³, 5=sp³d, 6=sp³d².
What bond angle does sp³ hybridisation give?
Ideal sp³ gives 109.5°. But lone pairs compress bond angles: NH₃ (one lone pair) = 107°, H₂O (two lone pairs) = 104.5°. In JEE, bond angle questions almost always involve this lone pair compression effect.
